Stan Herring and I (John Watts) are two consumer protection attorneys who live and practice in the Birmingham, Alabama area. We have defended more debt buyer (debt collector) suits against Alabama residents than we can remember.

We have been practicing law for about 30 years combined — Stan for 14 years and I’m the old man of the group — 16 years….

Most of our practice is devoted to actively suing debt collectors such as the ones that file suit against Alabama consumers. We also sue and counter-sue a large number of mortgage bank companies who are involved in wrongful foreclosures in Alabama.

Our goal in our practice and in this website is to give you useful information and to help you understand your rights when it comes to being sued by a debt collector. We also want you to put that knowledge to work — take action with what you learn.

If you learn nothing else from this website, we hope you are motivated to not only gain knowledge and take action. Doing nothing is what the debt collectors and collection lawyers want you to do — if you do nothing they will normally obtain default judgments against you which leads to garnishments and even the sale of your property (a “sheriff’s sale”).
